Casuarina Seniors Rugby Team officially registered for 2017

By Jonathon Howard from Tweed Valley Weekly

THE RECENTLY formed Casuarina Seniors Rugby Team has this week officially registered for the Far North Coast Rugby Union competition in 2017 and the team is already attracting some ex Super Rugby players to the side.

The Weekly caught up with Adam Leach an ex-Waratah player and professional coach, and Casuarina Beach Rugby Head Coach, to discuss the club’s formation and future.

Mr Leach said the new rugby team has appointed a senior coach, who has not only had international coaching experience but has played and coached at professional levels.

Mr Leach said the Seniors Rugby Union side started when Murwillumbah Rugby Club contacted Brian Laybutt (Casuarina Beach Rugby Club President) and expressed an interest to join with our junior club.

“They discussed this opportunity and felt there was a need to introduce a senior team for our juniors to have a pathway,” he said.

“We have 20 players so far that have registered their interest. The senior team will be playing in the first grade far north coast rugby competition.

Training for the new team will start end of January early February depending on competition dates which are yet to be confirmed, Mr Leach added.

Players can register their interest on the team’s Facebook page which is (facebook/casuarinabeachrugbyclub).

“We are having a player information day on Sunday, November 20 at 3pm at Kingscliff Hotel,” he said.

The team has also managed to pick up some sponsors and are seeking other support.

“Thus far, we have Kingscliff Beach Hotel and McGrath Property Agents as sponsors that have come on board immediately,” Mr Leach said.

“We are seeking support from any and all local business that might be interested to support the local rugby community.

Mr Leach said the seniors Rugby Union competition will add to the range of sport offerings on the Tweed as well as fill a void at the senior rugby level that is currently not being catered for.
